What’s going on at the Borough & County Council's

New Council new start

Following the recent local elections the make up of Scarborough Borough Council has changed, they're are now twenty five Conservative members, fourteen Independent members, six Labour members, three Liberal Democrat members and two Green members. The way in which the Leader of the Council is elected has also changed as well as the way the Cabinet is appointed. The Leader is now elected to serve for four years with the responsibility of appointing the Cabinet as opposed to the Council voting on the appointments.

How did we vote in the leadership contest?

In the leadership vote only two candidates put themselves forward for consideration, Cllr Tom Fox leader of the Conservative group and Cllr Eric Broadbent leader of the Labour group. Each candidate was given the opportunity to address the Council membership and put their cases forward as to why they should become leader of the Council. Cllr Fox gave a statement of intent to resign as leader of the Conservative group if elected as leader of the Council, this severs the link between political leadership and Council leadership, he also spoke of wanting Council to work towards a consensus approach to the way which Scarborough Borough Council operates which included making Cabinet appointments on the basis of ability and not along party political lines. Cllr Broadbent gave no such undertaking, it became apparent that he if elected as leader would have to consult with his group before making Cabinet appointments, we saw no intent to put residents and communities before party politics. As your Councillors we want to see Councillors no mater which party they belong to working together for the good of the Borough. We are committed to putting people before politics as we pointed out during the election campaign. Therefore we supported Cllr Fox. We hope the Labour group can work for the good of the Borough and residents as opposed to putting the Labour party first.
