Openess....Honesty....Trust

Putting people first

Residents and communities should come well before party politics.

Liberal Democrat Councillors:

  • Do NOT follow a party or group line

  • Are NOT instructed how to vote in Council meetings

  • Are free to act in the best interests of residents

  • Have proved we listen to our residents and act upon what we hear

Putting you in the driving seat!

The Council makes some pretty big decisions on various major projects throughout the Borough, shouldn't you the resident have meaningful and

These decisions do not come from nowhere, they take allot of planning, its is at this planning stage where YOU should be shaping the decision, plan or project. What's wrong with the good old Town meeting? Not just in Scarborough but Whitby, Filey and Eastfield too.

Liberal Democrat Councillors believe that:

  • Residents should be involved at the beginning of all major plans or ideas for the Borough

  • A programme of Town meetings for the year should be put in place for all to attend

  • Opinions gathered at Town meetings Must form the base of major projects and plans

  • Meaningless consultations should be ended

Think outside the box, lets do things differently!

Who's in charge?

You elect your Councillors to give you a voice in the Council, so why does it seem that Council officers are calling the shots?

Liberal Democrat Councillors believe that:

  • Councillors should not follow officers without question

  • Councillors make the decisions and officers implement them

  • Councillors are accountable to you and officers accountable to us

Honesty is best policy

Pink papers”, behind closed doors, confidential, all word and phrases now associated with Scarborough Borough Council. Yes sometimes when dealing with individuals and companies financial details in a Council report things have to be discussed in private, but this does not mean the whole of the report has to be restricted. You also have the right to know how your Councillor has voted on the big decisions you have elected them to take.

Liberal Democrat Councillors believe that:

  • Confidential reports should be kept to a strict minimum

  • Only the confidential part of a report should be restricted, the rest made public

  • All Council meeting votes should be done in public

  • All Council meeting votes on major issues should be recorded

This is the only way Council members will be truly accountable.

A word about the others

The Council has other political groups as well as ours, unfortunately they lack the ability to truly work for you and are caught up in their own agendas and in fighting.

independents” Are anything but independent:

  • They have their own political group with a leadership

  • They follow their group line even if it is against the wishes of the residents

  • They follow the officers lead, especially if they want key positions for their leadership

  • They have a group line to support Tesco, only two of their membership followed us in the vote.

Conservative Councillors are set in their ways, the ways of old:

  • They follow the officers recommendations without question

  • They fail to grasp how residents feel

  • They are happy to restrict information

Labour Councillors are driven by politics with little regard to local residents:

  • They are under direct control from their party HQ

  • They must get permission from HQ before voting in Council meetings

  • They put Party politics before the needs of residents

  • They often talk about national politics and do not concentrate on local issues
